THE HISTORY

The first Jews came to Ostrów in 1717 due to Jan Jerzy Przebendowski, the owner of the town.

1717

The first Jews appear in the area of Ostrów.

1724

The Jewish community is established and is granted a privilege by the town owner Jan Jerzy Przebendowski. The first synagogue is built and the first cemetery is established.

1773

The Jewish community employs the first permanent rabbi Jacob Lande.

1780

A new cemetery is established in the area of Ostrów.

1790

A ritual Jewish bath is built in Ostrów.

1835

A Jewish elementary school is established in the town.

1841

A two-storey school building is erected on Raszkowska Street.

1849

Abraham Berliner, the first Jew, passes the school leaving exams in the Royal Catholic High School.

1857

The cornerstone is laid for the new synagogue on Raszkowska Street.

1860

The new synagogue in Moorish Revival style is finished (its creator is Moritz Landé, the grandson of the first rabbi).

1861

The Jewish population in Ostrów reaches its highest number in the community”s history (1,919 inhabitants)

1867

A new ritual bath is built in Ostrów.

1872

19 people die in a catastrophe in the synagogue.

1874

The Jewish religion starts to be taught in the Royal Catholic High School.

1887

The Association of Jewish History and Literature is established in Ostrów.

1899

One of the streets in Ostrów (today’s northern part of Plac 23 Stycznia – 23rd January Square) is named after Israel Meir Freimann (1830-1884), a local rabbi.

1919

Otto Landsberg żydowski absolwent ostrowskiego Gimnazjum zostaje niemieckim ministrem sprawiedliwości.

1919-1921

A majority of Jews leave Ostrów and move to Germany (only a few dozens of Jews stay).

1935

The Jewish community employs its last rabbi Markus Halberstamm, who commutes to Ostrów from Kępno.

1940

The Jews are deported to the ghetto in Łódź. The Jewish quarter (so-called Zielony Rynek – Green Market) and both Jewish cemeteries are destroyed.

2006

The Association of Friends of Ostrów Synagogue is established; one of its founders is Bettina Landé-Tergeist, the great-great-granddaughter of Moritz Landé – the builder of Ostrów synagogue.

2006

The town of Ostrów concludes an agreement with the Jewish community in Wrocław (Breslau) and buys the synagogue.

2007

The first volume of „Studia Iudaica Ostroviensia”is published.

2009

Two lapidaria are built in the places where Jewish cemeteries used to be located.

2009

Renovation works begin in the synagogue.

2009

The second volume of „Studia Iudaica Ostroviensia”is published.

2011

The opening ceremony of the renovated synagogue is held.
